Left in her grandmother’s reluctant care, Monica Beauchamp is sent to school, moved up a form and drawn toward friendships her elders think unsuitable, including one with Olive. A little monkey, rides, a young clergyman’s rescue and a few scrapes shape a girl who must decide what kind of person she means to be.
