The author of John Halifax, Gentleman aimed to make the best possible collection of old-fashioned fairy tales for British children, tracing each to its source in Perrault, Madame d’Aulnoy or Grimm and retelling it plainly. Sleeping Beauty, Hop-o’-my-Thumb, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Little One Eye, Jack the Giant-Killer and many less familiar stories fill the pages.
