The byliny are the old Russian songs of what has been, and Harrison retells them for children who already know Jason and Perseus. Here are Volga the shape-shifter, Mikula the villager’s son with his mighty plough, and the old Cossack Ilya of Murom riding the open plain to Kiev against Tartar armies.
Written while Russia fought beside the Allies in the First World War, a lively door into Slavic legend. Download the free EPUB.
