A fourteen-year-old orphan finds himself bound to Abner Holden, a mean country farmer. He faces harsh treatment, a ghost in the attic and a fraud to expose before setting out to support himself, and on the road he meets danger, captivity and a ranger, while honesty and hard work slowly turn his fortunes.
