The story opens in India, where Brigadier-General Mathieson is carried down to Benares after a brave action, and then moves to England and the long question of who will inherit his fortune. A kidnapped child, a nurse, a deaf girl, a gypsy, a gambling den and a clerk with an uncertain past all play their parts in a tangle of deception.
