When his father dies owing money to the pompous Squire Newcome, young Paul Prescott takes on the duty of repaying it. The squire’s answer is to place him in the poorhouse kept by the mean-spirited Mudges, and Paul soon decides to walk to New York and make his own way, meeting friends, rogues and plenty of trouble on the road.
One of Alger’s earlier stories, dedicated to his old schoolmates, and full of the pluck-and-duty spirit his boy readers loved. Download the free EPUB.
