Eleven-year-old William Brown means well, or at least means something, and the results are catastrophic. Given a shilling, he spends it on sweets and the pictures and comes home inspired by the melodramas. He meddles in his sister’s romance, works below stairs, joins the Band of Hope, founds the Outlaws, and acquires a mongrel called Jumble, leaving a trail of exasperated adults behind him.
