Bored and sweltering aboard the gunboat Serpent, anchored in a muddy Malayan river, midshipman Harry Parkhurst wishes something would happen. It soon does: raids on pirate strongholds and fights with the piratical chief Sehi and his war-boats follow. The book shares the imperial attitudes of its time and place.
