An elderly professor’s airship, the Flying Mermaid, carries two boys and a crew across the ocean to a mysterious island, through cyclones, a whale attack and a mutiny, and then down into a vast hole leading towards the centre of the earth. The black servant Washington is drawn in the racial caricature of 1908.
