Long ago, on the west coast of Norway, two boats row out from a fjord toward the skerries, and the young Erling enters a world of Viking halls, Danish raiders, skalds’ tales and quarrels between neighbouring chiefs. Friendships turn to feuds, a heroine must be won, and the old pagan beliefs about guardian spirits and the fey sit beside hard fighting.
