David Blaize begins in the makeshift classroom of Helmsworth Preparatory School, construing Cicero beneath a kangaroo skeleton and a stuffed seal. The story follows him to public school, where he becomes fag to the admired Maddox and learns the rough codes of loyalty, cribbing and honour that govern the boys’ world.
