When the miserly Silas Tripp makes life hard at home, young Chester Rand looks for a way to earn his keep. A dying artist’s gift and a talent for drawing open a new path, carrying him to a New York real-estate office, a scheming bookkeeper, boxing lessons and, eventually, a journey West.
Classic Alger pluck-and-luck, with the twist of a hero who rises by art rather than commerce. Download the free EPUB.
