The book opens on a hockey rink as the Wyndham forwards sweep down against Wolcott, and then turns to spring and the baseball season. Tom, Loring and their friends, a triumvirate of school chums, compete for places on the nine, wrestle with psychology and slumps, entertain visitors and finally meet their rivals with the season at stake.
