Samuel Reed spends the August holidays with his cousins Thomas and John at their Uncle Harvey’s country seat. The boys ramble through the woods and fields, visit old Daddy Hall, walk to the creek, see a hawk killed and watch bats and locusts, while Uncle Harvey explains rain, corn and the uses of animals, and gently corrects their quarrels.
