Stables, a former naval surgeon and prolific writer for boys, sketches the animals he lived with, above all Aileen Aroon, the dog of the title. Around her he gathers stories of other dogs, a tale told by an old pine-tree, a starling, cockroaches at sea, and advice on keeping a dog well, written for boys and girls.
Affectionate, rambling animal stories from a Victorian who plainly loved his creatures. Download the free EPUB.
