A traveller at a country inn hears of Mr. Mopes, a wealthy man who has let his house fall to ruin and lives filthy among the soot and cinders of his estate, attracting tramps and sightseers. Dickens’s chapters from the 1861 Christmas number of All the Year Round include the tale of Miss Kimmeens, a small schoolgirl left alone over the holidays.
A short Dickens Christmas piece with a sharp moral about solitude, for readers who want more than A Christmas Carol. Download the free EPUB.
