Subalterns, grass widows, chaplains, clerks and hill girls fill these short stories of Anglo-Indian life in the 1880s. Lispeth, a Himalayan convert, is betrayed by an Englishman’s promise; a young officer kills himself over trifles; regimental pranks, flirtations at Simla and secret excursions into the native city all pass under a young reporter’s knowing, sardonic eye.
