Stories of Egypt in the last decades of the nineteenth century, many of them following Dicky Donovan, an Irish soldier of fortune who has won the Khedive’s favour and the title of Pasha. Intrigue at court, desertion, Arab raids and the overbearing blunders of British officers fill tales such as The Desertion of Mahommed Selim and The Eye of the Needle.
