The first book Scott published after admitting authorship of the Waverley novels is narrated by Chrystal Croftangry, a ruined gentleman who settles in Edinburgh’s Canongate and collects stories from the elderly Mrs. Bethune Baliol. It includes The Highland Widow, about a mother who cannot accept her son’s service in a Highland regiment, and The Two Drovers, a quarrel between Highlander and Englishman.
Scott in shorter form, with some of his finest tragic storytelling about Scotland after the clans. Download the free EPUB.
