These early stories and sketches first appeared in Indian newspapers in the 1880s and were gathered in New York in 1909. They include tales of Anglo-Indian society, among them a further episode in the schemes of Mrs. Hauksbee and Mrs. Mallowe, along with comic pieces and travel fragments written while Kipling was still a young journalist.
