Two Theban cousins, Palamon and Arcite, lie prisoners in Athens when both fall in love at first sight with Emily, the sister-in-law of Duke Theseus. Their friendship turns to rivalry, and their quarrel is finally settled in a great tournament before the gods. Dryden retells Chaucer’s Knight’s Tale in polished couplets, and this edition adds an introduction on his life and times.
