Dedicated to the exiled Italian patriot Giuseppe Mazzini, these poems of 1871 turn Swinburne’s thundering music to the cause of liberty. They hail Italy’s struggle for unity and the republican ideal, mourn the defeat at Mentana, attack priests and kings, and salute Walt Whitman across the ocean as a fellow singer of freedom.
