Jenkins tells the life of the restless author of Lavengro and The Bible in Spain, drawing heavily on his letters. The heart of the book is Borrow’s seven years with the British and Foreign Bible Society in Russia, Portugal and Spain, including his imprisonment in Madrid, set against his earlier years as a hack and vagabond.
