Francis Thompson was born in Preston, failed in medicine at Manchester and fell into homelessness and opium on the London streets before the Meynell family discovered his verse and took him in. Everard Meynell, a son of that household, draws on letters and notebooks to tell the whole life, from childhood through Poems and the writing of “The Hound of Heaven”.
