Written for young Americans, these four short lives follow Washington Irving up the Hudson and to Europe, Edgar Allan Poe from his actor parents to the writing of “The Raven,” James Russell Lowell from Elmwood to Hosea Biglow, and the traveller-poet Bayard Taylor. Each is told simply, with plenty of anecdote.
