Symonds wrote this life for the English Men of Letters series, drawing on Hogg, Trelawny, Medwin and Mrs. Shelley. He follows the poet from his birth in Sussex through Eton and expulsion from Oxford, his first marriage in London, his union with Mary Godwin, and the Italian years in which his greatest poems were written.
