Meacham was Oregon’s superintendent of Indian affairs and chairman of the 1873 peace commission to the Modocs, and was shot and left for dead at the parley where General Canby was killed. His account traces the Modocs’ removal to the Klamath reservation, Captain Jack’s resistance, the lava-beds siege and the trial and hanging that followed.
A firsthand, often sympathetic witness to one of the most tragic Indian wars of the American West, written with the assumptions of 1875. Download the free EPUB.
