Sent by the War Department to make peace between the Ojibwa and the Dakota, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft travelled by canoe up the Mississippi into what is now Minnesota and reached Lake Itasca, which he named as the river’s true source. His narrative covers Ojibwa villages and councils, the St. Croix route, and lists of the plants and animals found along the way.
