Henry Rowe Schoolcraft explored the Mississippi valley and served for two decades as a federal Indian agent in the upper Great Lakes. This large compilation brings together his journal of a winter journey through the Ozark Mountains in 1818–19, reminiscences of frontier life, notes on tribes and languages, and the Native legends and captivity narratives he collected.
A key source for Longfellow’s Hiawatha and early ethnography, written with the paternalism toward Native peoples of its day. Download the free EPUB.
