William Henry Gray came west with the Whitman mission party in 1836 and helped organise Oregon’s provisional government. His long history draws on personal observation of explorers, fur traders, missionaries and wagon-train settlers, and fiercely attacks the Hudson’s Bay Company and the Catholic missions, whom he blamed for the troubles of the time. Its partisanship and its view of Native peoples belong to 1870.
