In 1851 a young Scot caught the California fever, crossed the Isthmus of Panama by river canoe and mule, and landed in a San Francisco where ships lay stranded in the streets. He then spent three years among the mining camps, recording pack-mule trains, gambling saloons, miners’ law and the Mexican, Chinese and French diggers who worked beside the Americans.
One of the liveliest first-hand portraits of the Gold Rush, written and illustrated by a sharp-eyed outsider. Download the free EPUB.
