Schoolcraft spent decades as Indian agent at Sault Ste. Marie and Michilimackinac, married into an Ojibwe family, and collected the stories and customs of the Great Lakes peoples. This volume reprints pieces from his many works: personal reminiscences, scenes of travel and adventure, sketches of chiefs and their families, legends, and essays on what he called the character of the red race.
An important early source for Native American lore, though its views on race and civilisation are those of the 1840s, and the printing has gaps. Download the free EPUB.
