From his first journey west in 1818 to the Lake Superior country, where he served as Indian agent at Sault Ste. Marie, Schoolcraft kept a running record of expeditions, councils, studies of Ojibwe language and legend, and family life with his Ojibwe-Irish wife, Jane Johnston. His attitudes toward the peoples he describes are those of an American official of the 1820s to 1840s.
