The narrator builds a blockhouse with a fourteen-foot stockade on the steep banks of the Leona River, with rolling prairie to the south and virgin forest to the north. From there he hunts with his dog Trusty, rides with neighbours and soldiers from the nearby fort, and guards against raids on the frontier of settlement.
A vivid, first-person record of frontier hunting and settlement; its view of Native Americans is that of the 1860s. Download the free EPUB.
