Charles King rode with the 5th Cavalry in the Sioux campaign of 1876, the summer of the Little Bighorn, and these sketches recall it from the inside: long marches, short rations, skirmishes, the starving march toward the Black Hills and the comrades who did not come back. Further stories of army life fill out the volume. His view of the Plains peoples is a soldier’s of the period.
