Beulah Benton grows up in a Southern city orphan asylum, plain, proud and fiercely intelligent. Taken into the home of the brooding Dr. Guy Hartwell, she refuses to be dependent, earns her own living, and reads her way through philosophy into deep religious doubt, while friends marry and die around her and her feelings for her guardian go unspoken.
An intense, intellectually ambitious novel of 1859 from the author of St. Elmo. Download the free EPUB.
