In the rough back country of northern New York, Darrel, an odd, gentle clock-tinker who quotes the classics, takes an interest in the foundling boy Sidney Trove. As Trove grows up working with his hands and studying at night, a mystery about his birth, a theft and his love for a neighbour’s daughter test what the old man has taught him.
