Written while the war was still being fought, the novel follows a group of New Yorkers through 1862, from city drawing rooms to the Union army. Morford is less interested in battles than in the men who wore officers’ shoulder-straps and the society that sent them, and he notes in the text when each part was written as the news changed.
A rare view of the Civil War from the Northern home front, written in the thick of it. Download the free EPUB.
