Lawrence Van Alstyne enlisted in the 128th New York and kept a diary of what history leaves out: recruiting camp, the troopship Arago, quarantine and camps around New Orleans, sickness, food, boredom and the siege of Port Hudson. Later he served as an officer with a regiment of Black troops, and his pages follow that change too.
