Cooke begins with the Lees of Virginia, Light-Horse Harry and Stratford, Lee’s early career in the United States Army and his resignation in 1861, then follows him through the defence of Richmond, the Chickahominy, the invasion of Maryland, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, the last campaigns and his final years. Battles are described in full detail.
