A hundred thousand years ago, in the forest of Umbaddu beside the roaring Long-Snake River, a band of cave dwellers lives in fear of their chief, Grumgra the Growling Wolf. Ru, mocked as sparrow-hearted, is no fighter, yet his odd turn of mind brings trouble on him through hunts, fire, a tribal migration and the wrath of a chieftain who rules by the club.
