Jasper Carew begins with candid notices of his father and mother and the household that shaped him, then sets out into a world that keeps throwing him into scrapes. Servants such as Joe Raper, confidential friends, chance meetings and a mysterious enrolment in a service he does not understand carry him from Ireland onto the highways of the Continent.
