During the Franco-Prussian War, a group of bored Prussian officers occupy a Norman château, and the most delicate and vicious of them, nicknamed Mademoiselle Fifi, smashes its treasures for sport until a dinner with women from Rouen ends in an act of defiance. This edition opens with a biographical preface and also includes Boule de Suif, Maupassant’s story of a coach of respectable refugees and the woman they use.
Two of Maupassant’s sharpest war stories, short enough to read in an evening. Download the free EPUB.
