The book opens in a world without man, among dinosaurs wallowing in a steaming estuary, and then follows the earliest human tribes. Their hunter Grôm discovers fire, fights rivals and beasts, rescues the girl A-Ya, and learns to bend the first bow as his people take their first steps toward mastery of the earth.
