A British judge in Havana began these translations to learn Spanish and published them in 1860. Each chapter introduces a poet of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, among them Jovellanos, Meléndez Valdés, Quintana, Martínez de la Rosa, the Duke of Rivas, Espronceda and Zorrilla, with a life and versions of his poems.
