Published at Reydon in Suffolk in 1831 and dedicated to the poet James Montgomery, this first collection by Susanna Strickland, soon to be Mrs. Moodie, is fervently religious. The title poem dedicates her song to God; others retell scenes from the Old Testament, such as the Deluge and the fate of Zebah and Zalmunna, alongside paraphrases of Scripture and personal lyrics.
