Hayes describes a journey from the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan into little-known western Abyssinia, toward the headwaters of the Blue Nile, with notes on the frontier, its peoples, disease and the leper station at Gallabat. A closing chapter treats Abyssinian religion and customs. The outlook is that of a British imperial officer of his time.
