A crowd of high-school boys with nicknames like Poke, Step and the Shark form a club, and its name changes when their friend Sam keeps taking chances that land him in trouble. The year brings a long-shot gamble, a reckoning, and a campaign against an ogre of a classmate who wants to boss the class, while the boys learn that safety first need not mean wrapping yourself in cotton wool.
