Kwei-li, a lady of a great Chinese house, writes to her absent husband about life behind the walls of the family courtyard: her mother-in-law, her son, the festivals and duties of the household. Over the years her letters show China changing around her, until a daughter of the house wants, unthinkably, to become a doctor.
An affectionate portrait of a woman’s life in late imperial China, by an American writer. Download the free EPUB.
