Whilomville is a drowsy small town, and its children run it in their own fierce fashion. An angel child from the city gives the local children free haircuts, boys hunt lynx and show off for girls, a knife and a melon patch cause trouble for a hired man and his neighbour Alek Williams, and childish cruelty, pride and shame are observed with an unsentimental eye.
Some of Crane’s last work, wonderfully observant about children; its portrayal of Black townspeople reflects 1900. Download the free EPUB.
